In mid march we feed the bees with pollen patties to give the bees some nutrients as well as sugar, as the queen will be increasing her egg laying and they will need more food for the young.
Also if we have had bad weather we check the hives have not been damaged in any way.
At the end of march as the weather is warming up we will give the bees a Spring feed with liquid sugar syrup.
In mid february we check the weight of the hives by manually lifting them to see if the bees have enough food to survive. If hives are light in weight the bees will need topping up with food we feed them with them like a thick sugar paste called fondant.
If the weather has been ok the bees will be more active and will eat more.
Queen bees ( pic below with white mark on ) will now be coming in to lay
she will only lay a few a day as this is only the beginning of the season, the eggs she will start to lay will be hatched as new bees to replace the older bees in the hive
